My Cars From the 50s and 60s.

by Jerry King

I have been on your web site a few times now. I enjoy it very much!

I'm sending you a picture of a few cars I built back in the '50s and '60s.

My first car was a '40 ford coupe. And it went through a lot of changes over the years. I did race it a few times at Dallas and Fairburn but never won a trophy. I almost won one at Fairburn one time. I took every thing in my class and they put me against a '57 C gas Chevy and I almost beat him, but he got me at the finish line. I didn't think that was fair and I don't think I raced there again.

I'm looking forward to hearing about Hoyt Grimes, he was one of my favorite drag racers. I remember him running a belly tank dragster at Dallas back in the, I guess, early fifty's. (See photo GDR-00303 for a pic of this dragster. -- JD)

The '32 Ford sedan in the picture was a fun and fast car. I was running a 283 Chevy with '39 Ford box with 28 tooth Lincon cluster gear, 411 rear, aluminum flywheel, 11 inch H D clutch & pressure plate, home made cast iron headers of the cut (hack saw) and braze method, and much more.

I drove it back and forth to work and a few friends sometimes car pooled with me.

One night 2 guys were with me. These guys were always wanting me to let it go one time and I never would. One late night coming home from work I stopped at a red light at Ashby and Bankhead Hwy. and a '57 Chevy pulled up beside us and raced his engine. You know what that can do to you; you have very little resistance. The only thing, a police car stopped at the same light on the other side of the street.

I don't think I saw it because when the light turned green, I let it go. I put down the '57 bad and came to a stop at an all-night truck stop and we all got out to go inside. The cop stopped us and asked who was driving and I told him I was. All he said was slow that thing down from now on.

I thought I was a goner for sure, but he said he was off duty. These guys never bugged me to let it go after that. I don't think they had any idea how fast it really was.

I'm a slow typer so that's all for now. Keep up the good work. -- Jerry King
