Book Review: Shirley Muldowney's Tales From The TrackBook Review: Review by David Dilbeck, Editor I'm sure that you know who Shirley Muldowney is, but if you don't, I'll tell you. Shirley is the most successful female drag racer in history. Period. From her early street racing days to her four world championships in the fastest accelerating automotive powered machines in the world, Shirley has battled her way through life. From her early fights with sanctioning bodies and male competitors to her courageous recovery from injuries sustained in a high speed crash, Shirley has proven time and again that she deserves her place in drag racing history (and hall of fames). Although I've been a fan of Shirley Mudowney since her Funny Car days, most of what I knew about her was that she was a fierce competitor that wasn't afraid to say what she thought. After reading her new book that is published by Sports Publishing LLC, I have gained insight into what made Shirley the champion drag racer that she is and I have even more respect for her as a person and a racer. I received Shirley Muldowney's Tales From the Track today and decided to read a couple of chapters to get the feel of the book and finish it later when I had more time. Well, I couldn't put the book down until I finished it! The book starts off with a foreword by another drag racing legend, Don the Snake Prudhomme. After this great start, Shirley and Bill Stephens manage to make the reader feel as though they are part of the crew with riveting inside stories from throughout Shirley's drag racing career. As you would expect, Shirley doesn't mince words and lets the reader know how she really feels about several people in the drag racing industry. You'll learn about several highly publicized clashes and other events from her life and career that weren't publicized. If you are a new drag racing fan or a veteran fan as I am, you will enjoy and maybe even be surprised at the tales told by Shirley. There will be several people from the drag racing world that won't like this book very much. Make no mistake, Shirley still doesn't pull her punches. Thanks, Shirley for telling it like it is and letting us in on many of your thoughts! Great photos throughout the book help you visualize the journey from Shirley's days of street racing with her first husband, Jack, all the way up to the beginning of the 2005 drag racing season. Do you want to know how Shirley really feels about her "Cha Cha" nickname? Do you want to know how she feels about other women racers - past and present? Do you want to know about the creative license taken in the movie Heart Like A Wheel? If you want to know Shirley's version of how it was in drag racing, be sure to purchase a copy of Shirley Muldowney's Tales From the Track. You'll be glad you did!
