EVENT: NMCA / NSCA Hot Rod Power Fest (at Atlanta Dragway)

NOTES:

SUMMERS SCORES FIRST PRO STREET WIN, NEW RECORDS SET AT ATLANTA HOT ROD POWER FEST

The Hot Rod Power Fest used to be the final race of the year for the NMCA series. This year, NSCA merged with the show, and the Atlanta race was moved to the second race of the year for their series. In addition to this weekend's test and tune, bracket race and 15 Hot Rod classes, the rained out Moroso Florida Hot Rod event was completed this weekend at Atlanta, making for lots of passes down the track. Although the threat of rain scared off some spectators, there were only a few sprinkles during the entire race.

Freddy Sibley and his Hooters Jet Funny Car wowed the crowd, along with Pepe' Le Peu's Showdown Jet Dragster. As usual, the midway and swap meet offered bargains to the performance oriented crowd. One of the stars of the car show was a chevy powered Suzuki Samurai (one would wonder if the driver had any kamikaze tendencies). Another attraction was a sweet '64 Chevy II station wagon for sale.

Comp Cams / TCI Pro Street racer Annette Summers became 'King of the Hill' this weekend when she won the rain delayed Florida final against Hank Hill from McLeansville, NC. She needed that win badly, and took the Pro Street points lead with her Aiken, SC based '68 Camaro (for one day). Although she qualified for the Atlanta race, her engine was wounded and she was unable to make the call for the Atlanta event.

Hill made up for his Florida loss with a decisive victory against #1 qualifier Tony Gentile in the Atlanta Pro Street race. Hill's '96 T-Bird (one of the old Roy Hill Pro Stock School cars), blasted his mountain motored ride to a 6.73, 206.45 against a slowing Gentile. Gentile's Englishtown, NJ based '69 Camaro slowed to a 9.31, 100.90. Hill almost did not make it to the finals after one of his chutes popped out during his burnout. Since the other chute was still functional, he was allowed to "break the beams" to claim his semi-final bye run. Pat Musi ('69 Camaro - Carteret, NJ) was the lone semi-finalist.

The Accel / DFI Pro Outlaw Street race had fans on their feet. After a protracted 'burndown' at the starting line, Houston, TX racer Lawrence Conley finally staged his turbocharged car, and then left the starting line slightly too soon, resulting in a foul start. Normally, the story would have been over at this point, but his opponent, Jason Collins from Rainbow City, AL, got loose down track and didn't lift out of the throttle soon enough. Collins lost control of his car, crossed the centerline, hit the wall and tripped the finish line beams at 8.85, 77.19 with the roof of his car, re-instating Conley as the winner. Conley slowed to an 11.58, 73.89 to stay out of the way. Marc Dantoni ('68 Camaro - Staten Island, NY) finished in the semis after the number one qualifier Conley obliterated his chances of winning with a new ET record, 6.556, 212.29.

Another ET record was set in Nitrous Express Nostalgia Pro Street when the number one qualifier, Dale Pitman from Alliance, OH, put down an ET record of 7.549, 181.47 in the semi-finals, .04 seconds shy of the ET break of 7.50 seconds mandated by NHRA. Pitman's '67 Camaro took the final round win against Detroit, MI racer Darrell Thomas' '69 Camaro. Pitman turned in a 7.57, 180.02 to Thomas' right there 7.58, 183.69. Bruce Poulos ('72 Chevelle - Pallatine, IL) and Rob Golobo ('92 Camaro - White Lake, MI) were the semi-final finishers.

Defending Ramchargers Super Street champion Mike Scranton from Land O' Lakes, FL kept up his streak with a decisive 7.47, 189.90 in his '00 Mustang. His opponent, Sharpsburg, GA racer Chris Collins, slowed to an 8.21, 128.95 with his '01 Mustang in the final. Jimmy Blackmon ('92 Trans Am, Rockmart, GA) and Mike Yedgarian ('00 Firebird - Toronto, Canada) were the semi-final pair.

Phil Hines put the upset victory on defending EZ Street champion Gary Rohe during the semi-finals, and then took the final round win against Robert Curran from Bartlett, IL. Tonight, Hines stepped up to the plate with his Lebanon, OH based '86 Mustang and ripped off an 8.48, 161.88 pass in the final. Curran's '96 Corvette went 9.22, 162.47. Rowe, who hails from Romesville, FL, has dominated EZ street for years with his hard work ethic, but had to settle for a semi-final finish tonight. Andy Mayes ('70 Dodge R/T - College Grove, TN) also finished in the semis.

Hedman Hedders Nostalgia Super Stock was back in action, featuring a crowd pleasing mix of original and replica factory Super Stockers. Tonight's final saw a repeat finalist from last year, Brian Merrick from Dellray, OH. This time, Merrick took the win with his '64 Thunderbolt in spite of his opponent Jim Pidgeon's slightly better reaction time. Merrick went close to his 10.50 index with a 10.54, 126.77. Pidgeon's August, OH based '66 Impala broke out ever so slightly with an 11.989, 108.44 on a 12.00 index. Gary Richmond ('66 Fairlane - Atwater, OH) was the single semi-final finisher.

Two local racers fared well in their classes, with Dana Beaty from Walhalla, SC winning Street Eliminator in his '86 Mustang, and Bobby McNair from Seneca, SC taking runner up in Nostalgia Muscle Car.
