EVENT: First completed Summit ET series event at Atlanta Dragway in 2002

NOTES:

In spite of the unseasonably cold weather tonight, most of the racing action at Atlanta Dragway was completed tonight. Because the track was too cold for the high powered Super Pro cars, racing action was halted for them at 20 cars. Two time Atlanta Dragway Sportsman champion Rob Hogue stopped another former champion, Rusty Brown, in the Sportsman final tonight. Trophy Street featured another first time winner, Wes German. Former Motorcycle champion Jay Rhyne took out defending champion Joey Rutledge in Motorcycle. West Oak High School freshman Kelly Moore (15) won her second 13-17 Jr. Dragster race in a row tonight. Kyle Denton started racing 8-12 Jr. Dragster late last year, and had never won a single round until tonight. Denton made up for it by winning all of them tonight, including the final against another first time finalist, Ashton Shubert.

EVENT: Summit ET Series race at Atlanta Dragway/p>

In spite of the unseasonably cold weather tonight, most of the racing action at Atlanta Dragway was completed tonight.

Because the track became too cold for the high powered Super Pro cars, racing action was halted with 20 cars remaining in competition.

Two time Atlanta Dragway Sportsman champion Rob Hogue stopped another former champion, Rusty Brown, in the Sportsman final tonight. Brown had the better start, but Hogue's '84 Monte Carlo SS was better at the big end, carding a breakout 11.54, 116.59 on an 11.55 dial. Brown said he just came up today to have fun, so he brought his '01 Chrysler 300M family car and went all the way to the finals, where he broke out a little more than Hogue, 16.05, 84.75 (16.07 target). Hogue thanked Ed Nalley for the engine work, Sid Neal for the transmission, Bill for gas and H&R Race Cars for the fabrication work. The Racin' Reverend, Gerald Graves, finished in the semis.

Former Motorcycle champion Jay Rhyne, took out defending champion Joey Rutledge in Motorcycle. Actually, the race was over as soon as Rutledge left the starting line when he lit the big red bulb with his '01 Katana, and then broke out with a 12.25, 109.76 (12.50 dial). Rhyne ran his '83 Kawasaki out to a 12.23, 103.45 (12.34 dial).

Trophy Street featured another first time winner, Wes German. German's '82 Ford F100 broke out a bit with a 12.84, 105.64 on a 13.00 target after he saw his opponent, Brian Harris, light up the big red bulb. Even though he knew he was out, Harris chose to run his '00 Mustang all the way out, turning in a 13.94, 99.12 on a 14.10 dial. Last week's winner, Harold Wilson ('74 Nova), was the lone semi-finalist.

West Oak High School freshman Kelly Moore (15) won her second 13-17 Jr. Dragster race in a row tonight. Moore started her run with a good .562, then turned in an 8.87, 73.41 (8.82 dial). Kristen Neal (17) has been in the final round for six of her last seven races, but tonight, the accelerator cable broke after her burnout. The cagey Neal went ahead and staged her car, hoping Moore would red light or break out, but that didn't happen. Casey Free (13) finished in the semi-finals.

Kyle Denton (12) started racing 8-12 Jr. Dragster late last year, and had never won a single round until tonight. Denton made up for it by winning all of them tonight, including the final against another first time finalist, Ashton Shubert (8). If Shubert had been .004 seconds slower on the reaction time, the end result would have been a win for her, but the close .496 reaction time still lit the red light. Denton's machine went 9.81, 59.52 on a 9.57 target, while Shubert's ex Valvoline car, which won races for its two previous drivers, went closer to its dial with a 13.42, 46.48 (13.36 dial). Scott Digby (10) finished in the semi-finals in his first ever race.
